Plans for a UN-backed international force to stabilize Gaza and disarm Hamas are facing growing resistance. The United Arab Emirates announced it would not take part, saying there was no clear legal framework for the mission yet. The statement came from Dr. Anwar Gargash, a senior UAE envoy, during a conference in Abu Dhabi. (Source – The Gardian)
Israel has already rejected the idea of Turkey joining the mission, while Jordan’s King Abdullah confirmed that Jordanian troops will not be involved. Azerbaijan, which was once considered a possible contributor, skipped a recent planning meeting in Turkey and said it would only join if a full ceasefire were in place.
The UAE’s decision highlights Arab countries’ uncertainty about a US-drafted UN resolution that has been circulating in New York. The draft reportedly gives a US-led stabilization force the main role in maintaining security in Gaza once Israel withdraws — a plan that many in the region view with hesitation.
