Zohran Mamdani – The rising star in American politics
Zohran Mamdani, a progressive leader from Queens, New York, has quickly risen in the city’s political scene. Born in Uganda in 1991 to filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani, he moved to the U.S. as a child and grew up in New York City.
He studied at the Bronx High School of Science and later earned a degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College. His background has strongly influenced his focus on social justice and community advocacy.
Mamdani was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020, representing Astoria and surrounding neighborhoods. In the Assembly, he championed progressive causes including affordable housing, climate action, and social equity.
In 2025, he made headlines by defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo to become the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor. His campaign highlights policies such as rent freezes, free public transport, city-owned grocery stores, universal childcare, and higher taxes on the wealthy.
If elected, Mamdani would become the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor. His rise represents a shift toward younger, progressive leadership, and he has become a symbol of change and inclusion in New York politics.
