The U.S. government shutdown has reached into its sixth week, with no signs of a breakthrough. If it continues further, it could be the longest shutdown in American history, breaking the 35-day record from 2018–2019, when then-President Donald Trump clashed with Congress over funding for a border wall.
This time, the standoff between Republicans and Democrats has once again reached a deadlock. Both sides are refusing to back down from their main demands, leaving thousands of federal workers unpaid and many essential services disrupted.
Across the country, food assistance programs and other federal services have been hit hard, adding pressure on millions of Americans who depend on them.
